| Dot's adventures continued from hereDot goes the cleaning closet to go get some supplies and goes off to clean the morning room. However, as she enters the room, full of late afternoon light, she hears footsteps behind her. And then a hand on her shoulder. | |

| ((The previous post I accidentally made: https://cornerofhereye.forumotion.com/t35-dot-enters-with-her-duster-and-polish )) Dot freezes, duster in hand, just as soon as she hears the footsteps, but she still isn't quite prepared for the sudden touch and shrieks, dropping the duster to the floor and jumping back a pace. "Mr. Clearwater, you frightened me!" she protests, retrieving the duster and glancing anxiously around and towards the door. Did Carver send him to give her more grief? Or perhaps he has some of his own to give... | |

| He doesn't apologize for startling you, but then again you know Mr. Clearwater well enough at this point to not expect it. However, when you look up at his face, there are wrinkles of concern within it. "You should be more careful around Mr. Carver. What were you thinking asking him such a ridiculous question?" | |

| "I wouldn't have asked if it weren't important, Mr. Clearwater," Dot protests, sounding faintly hurt. "I give most of my wages to my mother and siblings every month, and the thieves cleaned out what I had left." She says this quickly, eager to defend herself, but then flushes in shame and turns back to furiously dusting the mantelpiece. "I don't expect handouts or charity, sir... I'll do the work; I always do. I was just hoping... well, it doesn't matter now." | |

| "No, it doesn't matter much now." He looks at her as if this is was obvious. However, you see concern winkle across his brow again and he continues. "Honestly, if you want him to ever consider giving you an advance, you should make sure all of the maids are up to snuff and that this house is spotless from top to bottom. Take a little initiative, why don't you?" He continues muttering under his breath, staring off into space. "Somebody needs to, if Carver expects this place to run without a housekeeper. Americans..." He focuses back on you and resumes speaking to you, after taking a quick glance around he room. "Aren't..." He struggles for a second to remember the names of the other maids. Once he remembers, he continues "...Gladys and Sarah supposed to be helping you?"

| Dot turns back to the mantelpiece, focusing hard to try and hide her temptation to scowl. Speaking of statements that are 'obvious'... "Gladys is in charge of the laundry, sir, and I don't know where Sarah is at this moment, but I imagine she's seeing to one of the other maid's tasks--sir," she answers him as steadily as possible. Hopefully Sarah is, in fact, doing her chores and Mr. Clearwater won't catch her flirting with one of the guests or swapping gossip with cook just to leave egg on Dot's face. | |

| Nigel seems a little put out that you aren't more receptive to his advice, but continues. "If I were you, I would make sure the other maids are actually doing their tasks and that they help you when it is needed. I've heard whispers that both of them are slacking. You wouldn't want to see Mr. Carver when he is truly angry, I'm sure." And, with that, having imparted what he believed was extremely helpful advice, Nigel turns and leaves you alone in the morning room. | |
